Portugal: Something New 1984

Still looking fairly new when I visited Portugal in 1984 were some crisp bodied Utic bodied Leylands lacking much of the usual chrome-strip we associate with Portuguese coach styling. This one was still sparkling new when seen in Lisbon working on express duties.

  1. Hi. Thanks again for a wonderful picture of the glorious RN days. This type of bus was my favourite to travel on. It was the best drive ever. Probably the perfect combination of a Leyland chassis and Utic body (type "Europa") on an incredibly smooth suspension. Integrally prefabricated coaches like Irizars these days are absolute crap compared to the passenger's comfort of these Utic goodies.

  2. Hello Christopher...

I have a few good memories lived in some of these vehicules.

Compared to the old combination of UTIC-AEC, this new model as a huge improvement on passager's and driver's comfort. Especially concerning the noise...

I've traveled a few times on them and I still remember how smooth it was to ride on one...

By the way, the one you posted is not doing a Express Service, but a Long Distance Service one (Longo Curso).

    Beste regards.
