No doubt local rate payers who didn't use the buses must have been pleased when the Tory Government made them have to be separate self financing companies. But few still remain as ruthless often unfair competition from the big groups gradually weakened them and 'reluctantly' bought them out at a knock down price as they headed towards insolvency. Of course the service that replaced them was always more expensive and infrequent, and in one or two instances like at Northampton which had always boasted a wonderful bus service it was so poor it simply ran itself down and down and eventually First Bus pulled out and let Stagecoach take over. Still much missed on the South Coast were the cheerful blue and cream buses at Eastbourne where I photographed this tidy looking Wadham Stringer bodied Dennis Dart No.8 H841 GDY when it was still quite new..
